Abstract

A Cinematic Approach to the Sociology of Deviance: A Clockwork Orange
Deviance generally emerges when the individual acts outside of the norms determined in the society and takes action that will cause unrest in the society. The individual commits a crime and becomes "deviant" in the eyes of society. The aim of this study is to examine the criminal relationship of cinema as a narrative genre with the way of showing a deviant individual and the deviant acts of the character. This study examines the 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange, which was an adaptation of Anthony Burgess's novel of the same name scripted and directed by Stanley Kubrick with an alternative ending. The movie in question was chosen because it contains a character that enjoys violence, and that character has been analyzed using the semiotic method. According to the main finding obtained from the study, the way the deviant character is depicted is mostly seen as arrogant, but also as apologetic. The place of the deviant in the society has been observed by the informal-formal control groups in the society, as a result of the fact that he continues his life as a labeled deviant even if he is treated that way.
