Abstract

A Study on the Impact of Media on Culture
People spend a significant part of their free time in front of the media, especially with the opportunities offered by new media. The mobilization of information, as well as the removing of limitations of time and authority, have brought about a further increase in media usage times. In addition to the opportunities it provides, some criticisms are directed against the media. One of these criticisms is that media damages the cultures of societies. Media content is subject to criticism for its routinization and similarity. A field study was conducted on media users. The results suggest that the majority of respondents expressed a high degree of attachment to their culture. It was understood that as the age of the participants increased, their attachment to culture increased at the same rate. According to the research, the participants think that media tools harm their culture. Among these tools, they stated that social media especially damages their culture more than other media tools. A significant portion of the women participating in the study stated that they can stop watching media programs that they think harm their culture. Again, the participants think that TV series and magazine programs damage their culture more than other types of programs.
