Abstract

Examination of Safranbolu Windows from Artistic and Sociological Perspectives
In Safranbolu traditional residential architecture, windows are products of well-planned design. Safranbolu windows are extremely aesthetic architectural elements that are important from an artistic point of view as well as their functionality such as lighting, protection from external factors and privacy. Depending on the location of the room, at least six windows, three windows each, and corner windows are placed on each wall to benefit from sunlight as much as possible. Room windows are generally 100-110 cm high and 50-55 cm wide at a ratio of 2/1. In order for the windows to look aesthetically pleasing and the room not to be seen from the outside, it is decorated with white curtains with lace or white work patterns, prepared in harmony with pillows and cedar covers. Safranbolu window and curtain are an example of artistically integrated fine elegance. With the opening of the iron and steel factory in Karabük in 1937, wooden houses were changed hands, sold and unconsciously destroyed by the people who settled in modern buildings in the Safranbolu Bağlar region. The elements that suffered the most from this destruction were the windows. Until the decisions of the Preservation Board, the windows were changed in accordance with the modern window fashion and modern windows were made instead of triple windows. In the study, different windows in Safranbolu residential architecture were classified and photographed. Lattice windows, skylights (revzens), tömek, who came window, musabak (giliste), black covers, world windows, windows with wooden bars, guillotine windows, wrought iron shop windows and windows of official buildings are explained with their functionality.
