Abstract

Süleymaniye Library, Ayasofya Collection of the Scripture Workbu'l-İlel and Ma'rifeti'r Ricâl Codicological Analysis
Manuscripts, one of our important cultural heritage, are organic artefacts that are vulnerable to deterioration due to their use and storage conditions, especially because they are produced from natural raw materials. The factors that make the maintenance of manuscript collections difficult are the variety of materials, size and shape of the works produced from organic materials, even on a single work. Therefore, they should be preserved under appropriate conditions. In order to start the conservation process, the artefact must be correctly identified, i.e. documented. In line with this purpose, a codicological examination of the manuscript with the full title Kitab al-'ilel wa ma'rifeti'r-rical (al-Jami'fi'l-'ilel wa ma'rifeti'r-rical) with the iron number 03380 in the Hagia Sophia Collection of the Süleymaniye Manuscript Library has been determined as the subject of the research before starting the conservation process. In this study, by using the "descriptive research" method; a description study was conducted in the scanning model, which includes the identification of the manuscript with the full title Kitâbu'l- 'ilel ve Ma'rifeti'r-rical (al Câmi'fi'l- 'ilel ve ma'rifeti'r-ricâl) with the iron number 03380 of Süleymaniye Manuscript Library, Hagia Sophia Collection, and its codicological examination in order to document its condition. Archaeometric analysis methods were used to determine the material properties of the work such as the molecular structure of the materials used in pigment, ink and paper making. At the same time, detailed images were recorded with a digital microscope as well as photographs.
