Abstract

The Place of Plomari Houses in Mediterranean Architecture
This research is about the residential architecture of the city of Plomari, located in the south of Lesvos Island, which developed in the 19th century thanks to the commercial activities on olives. It has been determined that the buildings have started to lose their originality due to the fact that the city as a whole has not been taken under protection. Considering the importance of urban housing fabric that contain important traces of the life and culture of a period, the city of Plomari was examined, documented and the factors affecting the formation of the urban fabric were tried to be analyzed. The traces of Mediterranean architecture in the housing pattern in the city are visible in the use of saddle vaults and construction system. The impact on the houses of the use of local materials, topography, economic activities, cultural interactions, traditional construction systems, human needs and lifestyle are seen in the settlement. The reason why Plomari Houses have been preserved for a long time despite not being under protection is that their ownership has remained with the same families for years. Due to the fact that the buildings have started to change owners in recent years, it is observed that they are losing their original features.
