Abstract

Examination of the Qur'an with Inventory Number 1903, which is Conserved in the Kastamonu Manuscript Library, in terms of the Art of Illumination
Manuscripts containing religious, scientific and literary subjects are important in that they are living cultural assets that have witnessed the periods in which they were written. Therefore, it is important that the manuscripts preserved in many libraries, museums and private collections in our country and abroad are handled in terms of both science and art and presented to the service of today's researchers. Among these libraries, the Manuscript Library located in Kastamonu, which has a historical texture that has many principalities, states and cultures in the past, also hosts many valuable manuscripts of the Qur'an, which we can describe as living history. The decoration of the Qur'an with inventory number 1903, which is among these manuscripts in the Kastamonu Manuscript Library, was the subject of the study. In the selection of the work considered within the scope of the study, the presence of the decoration of the relevant work and the fact that it has not been studied before were the determining factors. As a result of the literature review and the information obtained from the library staff, it was learned that the work was not the subject of any artistic work before. This manuscript, which has been analyzed in terms of ornamental elements, has been evaluated within the framework of the art of illumination, which are the arts of the Qur'an, and it has been tried to reveal whether the compositions of the work reflect the characteristics of the period it belongs to by analyzing motifs and styles. The study was supported by the visuals of the works obtained from the Kastamonu Manuscript Library.
