Abstract
The Role and Importance of Visual Arts in the Education of Individuals with Mental Disabilities
Mental retardation has been emerging due to various reasons. The reasons of retardation can be classified as prenatal, natal and post-natal. Despite their retardation, individuals can learn many details like normal individuals. Special education methods have been developed for this individuals who learns slower. Special education methods has also been used in Visual arts course. Visual arts course provides information with artistic ways for individuals with mental retardation. The studies conducted in the course provides individuals’ cognitive, affective and psychomotor development. Furthermore, emotions like happiness, excitement, pleasure are ensured wtih conducted studies. This research aims to determine opinions expressed in the literature regarding the place and importance of visual arts course on education for individuals with mental retardation. The results determined by various research are combined with teacher’s experiences and observations and the results are presented in this paper.
