Abstract

The Evaluation of Karadeniz Ereğli in the context of Barrier-Free City and Accessible Tourism
It is an inherent truth that individuals with disabilities possess the same basic rights and freedoms as non-disabled ones. The ability of disabled people to benefit from their fundamental rights and freedoms requires certain physical, functional and legal regulations. The aim of this research to examine Karadeniz Ereğli in the context of barrier-free city and accessible tourism, to draw attention to the situation of disabled people by identifying deficiencies and violations directed towards them and to foster awareness regarding disability issues. In this study, qualitative research method was used in the research utilizing both interview and observation techniques. The data for this study were obtained from the interviews conducted with 21 participants between July 1, 2023, and September 30, 2023. The data obtained were analysed and interpreted by using descriptive analysis technique. According to the findings of the study, it is understood that there are some regulations for individuals with disabilities in Karadeniz Ereğli, however, these are insufficient. It has been determined that individuals with disabilities encounter physical, environmental and functional obstacles in public transportation vehicles, streets, sidewalks, overpasses, parking lots, accommodation facilities, food and beverage establishments, beaches, coasts, tourist attractions and recreational areas. On the other hand, it is understood that societal sensitivity and awareness towards individuals with disabilities are insufficient. It is envisaged that if the physical, environmental, functional and social barriers in the district are eliminated, accessibility will increase, and disabled individuals will be able to participate more actively in social life.
