Abstract

Reception Study of the Netflix Series as the ‘Kuş Uçuşu’ from the Perspective of the Journalism Profession
The media conveys certain messages to the audience through programs and popular content. These messages, which are shaped by dominant codes, can be interpreted in different ways by the follower masses. These messages may not affect all viewers in the same way and at the same pace. In addition to the individual's personal characteristics, the social structure he lives in can also reveal this difference. In order to understand how the audience perceives the messages in the content, it is possible to make analyzes using the 'Coding-Decoding' model put forward by Stuart Hall, within the tradition of Cultural Studies. Using this reception model, it can be understood how the audience reads the messages conveyed. At the current stage of communication technology, new media environments have a significant potential in terms of audience compared to traditional media. Contents and series published on digital media attract great attention from the society. Within the scope of this study, it was tried to determine how the codes of the "Kuş Uçuşu" series broadcast on Netflix were received by journalism graduate students. For this, in-depth interviews were conducted within the framework of reception analysis. For the research, in-depth interviews were conducted with 8 students who watched the series, and the answers given by the students were interpreted based on the three reading styles developed by Hall. According to the results of the study, it is observed that the messages encoded in the TV series As The “Kuş Uçuşu" are perceived with a dominant, oppositional, and deliberative approach. In this respect, it is understood that the audiences who follow the content are not positioned in a passive state but can actively receive and interpret the content. On the other hand, most of the participants think that the difficulties and competitive nature of the journalism profession are reflected in the series as it should be.
