Abstract
A Proposal About Preserving the Industrial Heritage of Zonguldak Province Kandilli Region and Introducing it to Tourism
Illuminating the industrial heritage of cities sheds light on socio-economic development process of both the region and the country. The research of production facilities and factory structures inherited to the present day is called industrial archaeology, and the structures are called industrial monuments. Although many production facilities in Turkey have fallen out of use over time and become idle, these buildings have been re-functioned and protected since the 1990s. In the industrial history of the Western Black Sea region, coal has contributed to development of Zonguldak and the region. Therefore, Zonguldak, which is a city developed dependent on coal, has hosted important coal enterprises for many years. Within the scope of the study, the building stock that is identified and documented are located in the Lower Kandilli region of Armutçuk town, will be evaluated in comparison to Sewell Mining Town, Turda Salt Mine, Falun Copper Mine examples; which were brought into tourism and protected, maintained their place in the urban memory. This study aims to reveal the tourism potential of the Western Black Sea Region and to contribute to the revitalization of the region within the framework of industrial tourism by re-considering idle buildings within the understanding of museology.
