Abstract

Turkish Painting Art in East-West interaction, Fatih Sultan Mehmed Period
This study focuses on the cultural encounters between the Ottomans and the Italian states, which became close neighbours in the Balkans and the Mediterranean as the Ottomans expanded into Central Europe after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and the impact of social, political and economic developments on Turkish painting. In addition to rulers and patrons of the arts, political, diplomatic and commercial relations also played an important role in cultural exchange. It can be assumed that the cultural contacts of the two artistic traditions enriched each other's artistic and technical aspects. Beginning in the 15th century with the Conquest of Istanbul, the encounter with Western culture and art was reflected in the following years as a constant opposition between innovative policies and traditionalist conservative policies in social life and the field of art. All these opposing political approaches led to changes in the structure of the state and social institutions and formed the basis of conflicts that continue today. The discussion ground of these dichotomies and oppositions shaped around concepts such as East-West, traditionalism-modernity etc. has naturally been repeated in the field of art. This article focuses on the cultural policies of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror after the conquest of Istanbul as the beginning of this process and the ideological indicators of the paintings and medallions commissioned from western artists. The multifaceted language of the visual image will be analysed in relation to the wishes of Sultan Mehmed II and the qualifications of the artists.
