Abstract

The Example of Cultural Memory of the Aegean in the Context of Oral Culture: Homeros
It is clear that culture has been in constant flux throughout history. In this process of change, oral cultural narratives are important in transferring knowledge. Although it is known that the first studies on oral cultural narratives started from the 18th century within the framework of the "Homer Problem", it goes back to the 6th century B.C. Iliada and Odysseia works attributed to Homer; It is known that it was written down in the 6th century B.C. during the period of Peisistratos. As a matter of fact, although it is uncertain that the writings on Homer constitute a large literature and especially that the leading poet of Ancient Greece is a historical figure, it is obvious how much his influence in history and today is. A study by Milman Parry and Albert Lord shows that Homer's works are transmitted through oral culture rather than memorization. M. Parry discovered this work by a Serbian shepherd telling hearsay stories. Because, before the discovery of writing in Ancient Greece, it is stated that there were rhapsodos who traveled and told stories. So much so that Homer's works also contain verbal elements for the past in chronological terms. The depictions of Crete-Mycenaean Palaces and Western Aegean cities, especially in Iliada, have reached today in narrative form by taking place in the social memory. In addition, the narration of the past glories and heroism of the Ancient Aegean in Iliada and Odysseia is also evaluated in cultural memory studies. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the verbal narratives about the Aegean Region and how the dynamics of cultural memory have been in the memory of the long term. This study focuses on how important Homer is in understanding oral culture and in cultural memories.
