Abstract
The Concept of Palimpsest in Tourism in the Context of Place, Time and Material
Palimpsest is a concept that refers to the writing of new texts by erasing parchment paper to make room for new texts in ancient times when writing surfaces were rare. In the context of place and space, palimpsest expresses the analogy of each new layer carrying traces from the old ones, keeping the past and present alive. When considered on the basis of tourism, this concept emphasizes multi-layered accumulations in narrative, spiritual and semantic context in different physical layers of a structure, place or space. While traces of the old spirit are carried, new social and need dynamics become decisive. Tourist destinations, hotels, facilities and spaces also exhibit characteristics that can be recreated in accordance with the spirit of the times and changing needs. The building, which was used as a prison in the past, can be used as a hotel today; cities that had a very different urban texture in ancient times can gain a different character today. While spaces may carry meanings from each layer, it may also happen that the old layers completely lose their meaning and the space acquires a new character. In the light of this information, the aim of the research is to discuss palimpsest on the basis of tourism with sample of palimpsest cities, places and spaces in a conceptual and metaphorical context.
