Abstract

Survival Approach with Adaptive Reuse in Conservation: Niğde Göncü Mansion
Traditional Niğde Houses, which have lost their function over time and cannot meet today's needs, are important assets with historical and cultural values that need to be conserved. Giving the appropriate function to historical buildings and keeping them alive is a conservation method. Göncü Mansion is located on Cullaz Street, which is an important street texture that has reached decay, where traditional Niğde Houses are lined up. In Niğde Center, traditional houses that are dysfunctional are the majority and are in the process of disappearing. Göncü Mansion can provide protection for traditional houses as an example for other traditional houses in the city. Göncü Mansion, which remained dysfunctional for many years, was restored in 2007 with street rehabilitation works. The mansion, which remained dysfunctional for about eight years after the restoration, was burned and damaged because the street on which it was located was deserted. The mansion was adaptively reused as a boutique hotel in 2016. The aim of this study is to investigate the harmony of the building, which was originally a mansion, with its new function and to reveal the importance of the function to be given to historical buildings in reuse. In the research, a method based on comparative analysis of the original function of the building and the new function given to it was followed, and the new function of the building was evaluated with qualitative observation and spatial analysis methods. It turns out that refunctioning contributes to social and cultural sustainability, but the harmony of the function to be given must be carefully investigated. It turns out that adaptive reusing contributes to social and cultural sustainability, but the harmony of the function to be given must be carefully investigated.
