Tourism and Covid-19: A Bibliometric Analysis Approach
The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the COVID-19 disease is highly infectious and contagious. The long-term consequences for individuals are yet unknown, while the long-term effects on the international community will be dramatic. COVID-19 has changed the world forever in every imaginable respect and has impacted heavily on international travel, tourism demand, and the hospitality industry, which are some of the world’s largest employers and are highly sensitive to significant shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic. The tourism industry, injured on a global scale from the pandemic, has brought along an examination of COVID-19 and its relationship to tourism in international tourism literature. Considering that the tourism industry is the locomotive of our country's economy, a similar trend is seen in national tourism literature. This article presents the findings of a bibliometric study of COVID-19 literature in the tourism domain to find current areas of research and propose a way forward. Forty-one articles were included in the study. The analysis of the published literature named three main research themes and seven sub-themes. Various propositions have been developed by evaluating the common aspects of the 41 articles examined through this theme and other sub-themes. These propositions and other results of the study should serve as a roadmap for potential research opportunities.
