Abstract
Contribution of Alternative Tourism Types to Destinations: Artvin and Sports Tourism
In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the sport tourism potential in the destinations specific to the province of Artvin by considering the concept of "sport tourism", which emerged as a combination of sport and tourism activities. The universe of the study of the qualitative research method consists of competent and knowledgeable people in the fields of sport and tourism at the destination. In this direction, the study explores the terminology used in tourism at the destination as well as the views of the local administrator, the civil society organization representative, business manager, club officials, and academicians that serve in the sport and tourism field of Artvin. In the study, the sampling method aimed for maximum diversity, the semi-structured interview form was used in the interviews, and the obtained data were assessed by descriptive analysis. As a result of the study, it is found that there are significant levels of sport tourism in Artvin province. Festivals and events in the summer and winter months include features from nature, such as streams, valleys, and plateaus, providing alternative options for sport tourists. All stakeholders who are working and operating in the destination, as institutions or individuals, strive to fill roles and delegate participation at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Another view that participants share is that promotional and marketing activities should be in national and international areas of sport tourism. Also, business managers and staff must be competent in foreign languages and hire qualified employees.
