Abstract

Presentation of the Clergy in Turkish Cinema: A Review of Religious Characters in Kemal Sunal Films
Cinema is a cultural work that carries marks of the society in which it is produced. Actors of the cinema, such as producer, director and screenwriter, tend to reflect social events and facts through their windows in their works. Moreover, this trend is shaped by the religious, political, economic and social conditions of the society at that time. Cinematic reflection on the changing conditions in Turkey is also inevitable. In this context, one of the items handled in different ways in Turkish cinema is the presentation of the clergy. It is seen that cleric presentations are handled as a subject in Turkish cinema in different ways at different times. Based on the knowledge that it has been handled in three ways—excluded, narrowed and accepted—it is understood that Kemal Sunal films, examined within the scope of the study, are presented on the axis of a 'narrowed cleric characterization.’ In this study, by examining the clergymen within the framework of Kemal Sunal films, films from religious poets and clerics were examined. The study aims to show how clerics are presented in Sunal's films by analyzing documents from qualitative research methods and content analysis from quantitative research methods.
