Abstract
Deteriorations Observed in Surface Tiles and Chart Suggestion on Determination of Deteriorations
Due to its aesthetic appearance, durability and convenient use, tile has often been preferred as a surface coating material in architectural monuments. The use of tiles as a surface coating material is used in walls, columns, sarcophagi, domes, medallions and pulleys, windows, altars, minarets, etc. seen in architectural building elements. The tiles used in the surface coating are designed together with the load-bearing walls. Different deterioration factors that the tiles, the load-bearing walls and the binding mortars to which they are attached, have been exposed in the historical process, also cause the development of various deteriorations. This paper aims to describe the deteriorations that may occur in the tiles used as surface coating material and their carriers and binders, by supporting them with accessible visuals. At the same time, a deterioration chart has been prepared to be used in such studies, and it is aimed to be an example in examining tile deterioration. As a matter of fact, repairing the deteriorations seen in the surface coating tiles used in historical buildings with the right applications depends primarily on the definition of the existing deteriorations by considering them from a correct and holistic perspective.
