Abstract

Comparative Analysis of Candidate Cities to Host 2026 Winter Olympic Games and Suggestions for Erzurum
The Olympic Games have meanings far beyond a sporting event for the host cities. The Olympics, which are seen as an economic, social and environmental opportunity for the candidate city, region and country, also have the potential to affect urban development in the long run. In this study, the cities of Calgary (Canada), Erzurum (Turkey), Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo (Italy) and Stockholm-Are (Sweden), which took part in the dialogue phase to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, were comparatively analyzed by taking into account the official reports of the IOC. Considering the findings obtained as a result of this analysis, suggestions were made about how the future strategy of Erzurum hosting similar large organizations should be shaped. In this context, first of all, taking into account the suggestions of the IOC, the deficiencies in accommodation, transportation and facilities, which are seen as the biggest deficiencies in Erzurum's candidacy, should be eliminated and investments should be made in accordance with international standards. With a new process that can be defined as strategic planning, it should be ensured that all investment decisions are aligned with Erzurum's long-term development strategy and vision. It should not be forgotten that time is needed to complete all these deficiencies and the process should be managed with patience and determination. In the short run, it is a more correct strategy for Erzurum to turn to organizations other than the Olympics. With this strategy, the city will gain the necessary organization and planning experience and increase its chance to host larger organizations in the medium and long term.
