Abstract

Representation of the Lower income Group in TV Series
The self-existence of man leads to the natural formation of the other. Marginalization is one of the biggest obstacles for society to come together. On the other hand, othering occupies a significant place in the problem of evil. Individuals who see themselves as strong may come closer to those they see as socially weak in a negative way. The fact that strong individuals somehow escape from punishments also has an effect on this behavior. Media content can create certain stereotypes by reflecting representations of life. People living in society can be affected by these representations of the media. Even if othering expressions in media contents are conveyed with humorous methods, the results can be negative. In the context of this research, five TV series broadcast in various periods on Turkish television were examined in the context of othering. In the study, the document analysis method was used and the scenes and dialogues of the serials were examined. As a result of the research, it was observed that the lower-class people represented were mostly described as uneducated, ignorant, and incompatible. In addition, the moral structures of these people were portrayed as problematic, liars, gossipers, greedy, and opportunist individuals. Again, in the dialogues in the TV series, humiliating, and insulting or marginalizing statements about these individuals were included.
