Abstract
The Accounting and Auction Transactions of the Uşak and Banaz Zawiyah Foundations (1831-1863)
Derwish lodges and zawiyahs, which are important institutions of Islamic culture and civilization, became one of the important institutions of the Turkish-Islamic States with the Turks' adoption of Islam. These institutions, which had important services in the process of Turkification and Islamization of Anatolia, spread to the farthest corners of Anatolia together with the foundation system during the Anatolian Seljuks and Ottomans. The books of the Uşak and Banaz zawiya foundations, whose foundation dates back to the Anatolian Seljuk Period, about the accounting and auction transactions between 1831 and 1863, provide important information about the financial status and functioning of these zawiyas. The expenses of foundations and zawiyas, whose incomes are entirely from tithe based on agricultural production, consisted of salary, accounting, and food expenses. This situation shows that the zawiya foundations in Uşak and Banaz were not economically strong in the examined period. The zawiya foundations, which gained a more centralized structure with the establishment of the Ministry of Foundations in 1826, continued their existence until they were closed by law in 1925, and their income sources were transferred to the General Directorate of Foundations. In this study, the accounting and auction transactions of the zawiya-foundation revenues in the Uşak and Banaz districts of the 1831-1863 Kütahya Sanjak and the villages were connected and examined based on archival documents.
