Abstract
Consolidation Methods Used in Textile Restoratıon and Their Effect on the Object
The conservation of museum artefacts encompasses different practices, including preventive conservation or active conservation methods, or both. Without the right decision, both practices can play a role in accelerating the deterioration of museum artefacts in the long term. Passive conservation, i.e. leaving the artefact in its natural state, can lead to subsequent damage or disintegration, while the use of intrusive conservation methods to help preserve the artefact structurally for a long time can lead to some changes in the mechanical and physical properties of the artefact. When considering the conservation of a textile artefact, it is very important to consider and plan the possible effects of the treatments to be applied, as well as their long-term effects and possible side effects. Stitching is probably one of the most widely used treatment methods in textile restoration. It is a versatile technique that can be applied to cover and prevent the spread of different types of damage or to mount on any material. However, recent researches have focused on the long-term damage that this frequently used technique may cause to the artefact. In this direction, the aim of the study is to inform about these researches and to explain with practical examples how the stitches used in textile restoration for the protection of the artefact cause an effect on textiles after long-term storage and exhibition when they are not applied correctly.
